Romain Grosjean has completed his return to the cockpit of an F1
car, almost five years on from his horror crash. At the 2020
Bahrain Grand Prix, Grosjean suffered a massive shunt into the
barrier on the opening lap, which saw the car split into two and
burst into flames. After spending 27 seconds in the blaze, Grosjean
escaped with burns to his hands – a miraculous outcome, given the
scale of the crash. Although he was due to depart the F1 grid at
the end of the campaign as Haas opted to field an all-rookie
line-up in 2021, the accident ruled Grosjean out for the remainder
of the season and denied the Frenchman a proper farewell from the
sport. But five years on from the crash, Grosjean was handed the
opportunity by his former Haas team to get back behind the wheel of
an F1 car as part of a testing of previous cars (TPC) outing.
Taking place at the Mugello Circuit, Grosjean jumped behind the
wheel of the VF-23 car that Haas used during the 2023 season.
Initial pictures show that the test is taking place in wet
conditions, with the car running Grosjean's number '8' that he used
from 2014 up to his final race. See the images of Grosjean's test
