In the high stakes, high speed world of Formula 1, drivers are often defined by lap times, championships, and rivalries. But sometimes, it’s the quieter, more personal stories that remind us of the human side behind the helmet. On Sunday evening, Lewis Hamilton confirmed the passing of his beloved bulldog Roscoe — a dog who had become an emblem of love, loyalty, and companionship in his life and throughout the paddock.

Roscoe’s death marks the end of a decade-long bond. In his emotionally charged post, Hamilton recounted how Roscoe had spent four days on life support, battling pneumonia, before Hamilton made the “hardest decision” to say goodbye. “He never stopped fighting… I feel so grateful and honoured to have shared my life with such a beautiful soul, an angel and true friend,” Hamilton wrote.

Roscoe: More Than a Pet

To many fans, Roscoe was more than just a dog — he was a fixture of Grand Prix paddocks. He frequently accompanied Hamilton to races, was often seen in the paddock, and even appeared in the F1: The Movie.

Roscoe had his own following: over 1.3 million Instagram followers followed his life, his downtime, and his affectionate presence at events.

He was also part of Hamilton’s personal journey. Roscoe had endured health challenges, most notably pneumonia in earlier seasons, and Hamilton often spoke publicly about his concern and care for him.

One detail that stands out: Hamilton once revealed that he had put Roscoe on a plant-based diet, believing it helped his health — improved breathing, mobility, and quality of life were among the changes Hamilton cited.

Hamilton’s Response & What It Shows

Losing a close companion is never easy, and Hamilton’s own words convey just how profound this loss is. His tribute wasn’t just for the public— it was deeply personal.

He acknowledged that while he had lost another dog, Coco, in 2020, this was the first time he had faced putting a pet to sleep. The depth of that emotional weight comes across clearly: “It is one of the most painful experiences … to love so deeply and to be loved in return.”

Beyond the post, Hamilton also withdrew from a Pirelli tyre test at Mugello to be by Roscoe’s side. Ferrari confirmed that reserve driver Zhou Guanyu would cover the test in his place.

The outpouring of support from the wider F1 community was swift. Mercedes, where Hamilton spent much of his career, also expressed condolences: “Roscoe brought so much joy to those who met him … he’ll always be part of our family.”

Why This Matters to F1 Fans

In a sport often driven by performance, contracts, and showmanship, the bond between Hamilton and Roscoe reminded everyone of the human side behind the racing. Roscoe was a constant through championship wins, team changes, and personal evolution.

He served as a comforting presence, a loyal companion when Hamilton was away racing, and a reminder that even elite athletes form deep attachments outside their profession. For many fans, Roscoe’s passing feels like losing a beloved member of the F1 family.

Final Thoughts

The passing of Roscoe is, above all, a tragic loss for Lewis Hamilton and his close circle. But it also reminds us of the importance of the small things — the bonds, the love, and the quiet moments that ground even those who live life at 200 mph.

Roscoe may no longer attend grand prix weekends, but his legacy will endure: in the millions who followed him, in the paddock memories, and in the heart of a man who loved him deeply. Hamilton captured it best: to share those years was an honour.

Our thoughts go out to Lewis during this time and we hope he will come to peace soon enough.
