Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu has revealed that his former Red Bull counterpart, Christian Horner, had reached out to the American outfit for a potential role.
Horner has been a free agent since his dramatic exit from Red Bull following July’s British Grand Prix. After securing a hefty severance package, the F1 veteran is now on the hunt for his next big move.
Known for his commanding presence and relentless drive, the Briton’s name has been swirling around the paddock, with whispers linking him to teams like Alpine and Aston Martin.
But the revelation that he approached Haas – a team fighting to climb the midfield ranks – is unexpected. However, according to Komatsu, the “exploratory” talks never progressed beyond a polite first step.
“Yeah, it is true that he approached us. And then one of our guys had an exploratory talk. And that’s it. Nothing has gone any further. It is finished,” Komatsu revealed on Thursday ahead of this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.
Pressed further, Komatsu remained firm in shutting the door: “I’ve got nothing more to say. Like I said, you write whatever you want. I’m not fuelling that story!”
A Power-Hungry Leader in Search of a Home
Horner’s storied career at Red Bull, where he transformed the team into a championship juggernaut, makes him a tantalizing prospect for any F1 outfit. But his reputation as a leader who craves control could complicate his return.
Haas, a team tightly aligned with Ferrari and focused on steady progress under Komatsu’s pragmatic leadership, might not be the ideal fit for Horner’s larger-than-life ambitions.
Still, the fact that he initiated contact shows he’s casting a wide net in his quest for a new challenge.
Elsewhere in the paddock, Aston Martin has also been floated as a potential landing spot. Team principal Andy Cowell, when asked about Horner, kept things diplomatic but didn’t close the door entirely.
“I think Christian’s record speaks for itself. He’s a great competitor. I guess it’s down to Christian to work out what he wants to do,” Cowell said.
“He might want to walk away from the sport, he might want to do something else in the sport, but that’s down to Christian, isn’t it?”
Classic F1 non-answer, but it’s enough to keep the rumor mill spinning.
For now, Haas is off the table, Alpine insists it remains focused on its own rebuild, and Aston Martin is playing coy. That leaves Horner’s next chapter an open question.
But if one thing is certain, it’s that Formula 1 is unfinished business for Christian Horner.
