Formula 2 is back in Baku for this weekend as the Formula 1 calendar returns to Baku for the 2025 Azerbaijan GP. After a chaotic qualifying session yesterday, Villagomez started on pole position for the reverse-grid Sprint format.

Three Out at the Start

With a fantastic start off the line, Sebastian Montoya overtook pole sitter Villagomez and went up to second behind new race leader Dino Beganovic. Villagomez, unfortunately, was not able to make it out of the first corner as he was spun around. Oliver Goethe was the next driver to get spun around, heading out of the race in Turn 2. After the incident with Goethe, fellow Red Bull Junior Pepe Marti was forced to return to the pit lane with issues following the contact.

Clean Restart

After almost five laps under the Safety Car, Beganovic led the pack as driving restarted. After a little tussle in the back, Kush Maini grazed the inside wall of Turn 2, forcing him to return to the pits. Consequently, this required him to change his front wing before ultimately retiring from the race. Elsewhere, behind Martinius Stenshorne in second, a DRS train started to form as drivers settled into the race.

Unfortunate Debut for Stenshorne

After qualifying P7 on debut in Formula 2, Stenshorne was forced to pull over to the side of the track due to car issues. Therefore, this brought Montoya back up to P2 as the Virtual Safety Car was deployed. The growing battle between Luke Browning and Alex Dunne became a fight for the final podium position. Eventually, a full Safety Car was brought out, forcing Beganovic to get ready for another restart.

Another Safety Car & Rain Incoming

Whilst under the Safety Car, a drizzle of rain began to fall on the track. With cold tyres, Beganovic led the drivers yet again in another successful restart for the Hitech driver. As there are no intermediate tyres in Formula 2, the drivers continued racing on their soft slick tyres. With the rain not progressing any further, the drivers continued to push to the end of the race.

On lap 17, with a great move down the final straight, Browning took hold of P2 from Montoya, who had no response to the power of the DRS. The difficulties continued for Montoya, who, despite having driven a fantastic race, began to slowly drop down the field due to engine issues.

Hitech 1-2

After a fantastic run off the line and a consistent response to every restart, Dino Beganovic claimed the Sprint victory in Baku. Furthermore, his teammate Luke Browning followed close behind in second. Despite flat-spotting his front left tyre, Dunne claimed the final podium position.
