Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies believes it is "none of our business"
over the impact the team's renewed threat will have on McLaren's
championship hopes. Max Verstappen won in Azerbaijan for his second
straight victory to reduce Oscar Piastri's drivers' standings lead
to 69 points, with Verstappen just 44 behind second-placed Lando
Norris after a poor Baku for the leaders. Piastri crashed out with
Norris only finishing seventh, as Red Bull appears to have turned a
corner in performance with its tricky RB21, aided by a recent floor
upgrade proving transformational. However, as Verstappen meddles
in the all-McLaren title fight, Mekies feels the team must not
think about the impact of McLaren as it goes about its own job. "I
guess the short answer is that we do not think there is a silver
bullet with a single aspect," Mekies told media, including
RacingNews365. "We think there is a combination of a lot of small
details that have extracted more performance out of the car, and of
course, a part of that is the floor. "Part of it is some changes
we have made, and to the extent of the competitiveness in different
circumstances, the honest answer is that we don't know. We are
obviously hopeful, but we'll soon find out. "The confidence goes
up, so you can take a bit more risk every race and experiment a bit
more and unlock more lap-time. "Whether that has an effect on what
McLaren does, honestly, I don't know; it is probably none of our
business, so we concentrate on ourselves. That is what we want to
see. "We want to see the car making progress in some areas, and if
it works, it will be good against McLaren, and good against
Mercedes and Ferrari."
