Isack Hadjar was left "pissed off" at himself following a costly
mistake in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which left him the lowest Red
Bull-backed driver. Starting from eighth, Hadjar made a good start
and passed the McLaren of Lando Norris on the opening lap, before a
safety car for Oscar Piastri's crash. On the initial restart at
the end of Lap 4, Hadjar did well to maintain his place and even
battled George Russell ahead for sixth into Turn 2 on the next lap,
but disaster would strike near the end of that tour. Rounding Turn
16 onto the long pit-straight, he ran wide and made a mistake,
allowing both Charles Leclerc and Norris to power past, leaving
Hadjar in back in ninth before Lewis Hamilton passed for 10th.
With Max Verstappen winning, Liam Lawson taking a career-best of
fifth and Yuki Tsunoda his highest placing since fourth at the 2021
Abu Dhabi GP, Hadjar came home last of the Red Bull-backed drivers,
all of whom scored points for the first time since Verstappen, Alex
Albon, Pierre Gasly and Daniil Kvyat at the 2020 Russian GP.
Reflecting, Hadjar handed himself some fierce self-criticism. "It
is a shame because I felt good on the mediums, I overtook Lando on
the first lap, and it felt good," Hadjar explained to media,
including RacingNews365. "I did a repeat of [qualifying] on the
kerb, and I lost two places straight away to Charles and to Lando,
so it is frustrating and we fell back, but on the hard tyre we were
really quick and catching the guys ahead. "[Without the mistake],
there is a probability we would have finished in the same position.
I don't think it changed the race; it is just that it could have
changed the race, and I made this mistake. "That is what pisses me
off. In important moments, I can't allow myself to make mistakes
like this. "I am just mad because I didn't really take the wind
into account [in qualifying at the final corner], I did a repeat in
the race, and that pisses me even more."
