Oscar Piastri and Franco Colapinto have been fitted with new
chassis ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday. Both drivers
found the barriers during the qualifying session, with Colapinto
hitting the wall at Turn 4 during Q1 while Piastri shunted at Turn
3 during Q3. The McLaren and Alpine teams carried out inspections
of the cars after the session and determined they had been damaged
beyond repair. As a result, both drivers had new chassis fitted
ahead of the race. Despite the change, neither driver has been
penalised. Article 40 of the sporting regulations grants drivers
permission to use a spare survival cell if the previous unit has
"suffered genuine accident damage or has suffered a significant
failure or fault". The parts that have been replaced are identical
in spec to the damaged components, which is another penalty-free
requirement outlined in the regulations. Piastri will take the
start of the race in ninth place, two positions behind title rival
and team-mate Lando Norris. Franco Colapinto will start the grand
prix from 16th on the grid.
