Max Verstappen is adamant Red Bull must deliver a "strong team
performance" at the Singapore Grand Prix, as the Milton
Keynes-based squad looks to build on its recent run of form. The
four-time F1 drivers' champion heads to the Marina Bay Street
Circuit having won the past two rounds. However, he has never won
under the lights in the Southeast Asia city-state. It is the only
venue on the F1 calendar that the Red Bull driver is yet to
conquer, with Verstappen highlighting the "unfinished business" he
has there. Despite the dominance of the McLaren MCL39 and the
healthy advantage in the drivers' standings enjoyed by Oscar
Piastri and Lando Norris, the Dutchman has clawed his way back into
– albeit distant – contention. With seven rounds remaining, he sits
69 points adrift of the former, but has wiped 35 points off the
24-year-old's advantage with his recent victories. Speaking ahead
of the trip to Singapore, Verstappen said: "The last two races have
been great for the team; we have made really strong progress, found
a positive set-up with the car and are heading in the right
direction. "Both were low downforce tracks that we performed well
at, and the Singapore circuit is quite different, so will be more
of a test. "It is quite a physically demanding track for all
drivers, and in this race, it is about really getting comfortable
with the uncomfortable." Not a happy hunting ground Singapore has
not traditionally been a happy hunting ground for Red Bull, which
has tended to struggle in high-downforce environments. Although the
floor upgrade ported to Verstappen's RB21 in Monza has seen a clear
step in performance, this weekend is a litmus test for the progress
made by the six-time constructors' champions. Through the
contemporary ground-effect era, the 67-time grand prix winner has
finished the original F1 night race in seventh, fifth and second,
respectively. Whilst results have trended in the right direction,
McLaren is expected to be formidable in Marina Bay, given the
strain on tyres and the medium-speed configuration of the track.
Nonetheless, Verstappen is focused on delivering, alongside
team-mate Yuki Tsunoda, who enjoyed the best weekend of his Red
Bull tenure last time out in Baku with sixth place. "It is a cool
street circuit to drive, but of course, I have never won there, so
you could say there is unfinished business," the 28-year-old added.
"We need a strong team performance, so looking forward to what the
week brings." Will Max Verstappen finally triumph at the Singapore
Grand Prix? Let us know what you think by voting below in the
