Charles Leclerc has explained his love for Ferrari is keeping him
motivated despite another disappointing season for the team. Having
narrowly missed out on the constructors' title last year, Ferrari
entered the new season hoping to consistently fight at the front of
the field and once again challenge for the championship. However,
the Italian squad is yet to take a grand prix win this year and is
the only team inside the top four that has not yet tasted victory.
Leclerc has not had a solid shot at a title since joining Ferrari
in 2019, but asserted he has full faith in the project. "Because I
love this team very much, I think that's the answer,” Leclerc said
when asked what keeps him motivated at the team. "I've always loved
Ferrari and that's where I draw my motivation from, because I want
to bring back Ferrari to the top, no matter how long it takes.
“I’ll do absolutely everything until I stop believing in the
project. But at the moment I'm fully into it, I'm fully working on
it. “That’s what motivates me.” Despite its underwhelming
performance, Ferrari is in the fight for second place in the
standings, but slipped to third behind rivals Mercedes last time
out in Baku. Having accepted early on that Ferrari was not in a
title fight, Leclerc detailed his primary goal shifted to ensuring
he ends the season with a win in hand. “Of course that doesn't
erase the disappointment that I've had at the beginning of the
season when I saw that we were quite a few steps behind
McLaren,” he said. “But then you reset and you find your motivation
in other goals, in other targets, which is now to hopefully get a
win this year. "It's underwhelming compared to where we wanted to
be, but it's the situation we're in, and as a driver I've got to
make the best out of this situation, not only for the team but also
for myself. “I’m very competitive as well, so the fact that we've
got two cars is also something that pushes me to keep being at the
top of my game, and to keep improving. “So on that I'm super
motivated, but as I said, of course the disappointment was there at
the beginning of the season."
