Lando Norris has highlighted he shares Max Verstappen's desire to
take part in other racing categories before he finishes his racing
career. Verstappen has long voiced his aspiration to expand his
racing portfolio beyond F1 and claimed a famous debut victory last
weekend in a GT3 endurance outing at the Nordschleife circuit. With
the F1 schedule featuring 24 rounds, it offers very little time for
the drivers to dip their feet into other categories while they hold
a seat in the pinnacle series. But Norris has stated he will seek
to have a drive elsewhere going forward, hinting at McLaren's Le
Mans venture that will start in 2027 as an option. “I would love
to,” Norris told media including RacingNews365 when asked if he
would like to do endurance racing. “Zak [Brown] spoke about it with
McLaren going to Le Mans. “I'm not going to be in Formula
1 forever. I want to go and do other things and live my life, try
the things. "I'll enjoy my time in Formula 1 whether it's a mix at
some point of also doing some of the other races, I'm not sure, or
it might be when I retire from F1 that I try to do other things.”
Norris is not a complete stranger to endurance competition, having
competed in the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2018 with Fernando Alonso as
a team-mate. "I loved doing Daytona. I did it with Fernando, it was
a cool experience for me at the time. “Whether it's Le Mans or
Daytona or Sebring, whatever it might be, I want to go do all the
things.” Max Verstappen in 'easier position' for non-F1 appearances
There is one avenue of racing, however, that Norris has ruled
himself out of. “I think the main thing probably will never do is
oval racing, it’s just not for me,” Norris declared. Verstappen's
Nordschleife outing followed his back-to-back F1 victories in Italy
and Azerbaijan. The Dutchman strong duo of races has prompted
suggestions he could be a late factor in the ongoing title fight
between Norris and team-mate Oscar Piastri. However, the McLaren
duo remain the key protagonists, making such ventures into other
series' much more difficult, according to Norris. “I respect Max
for going and doing such a thing,” Norris said. “He's in a much
easier position to go and do those things, if he's fighting for a
championship, and those kind of things, it probably wouldn't look
the best. “But he's in a position where he's also won four
championships. He’s not miles off a championship this year, it can
still be possible if Red Bull turn things around. “He has a bit of
an easier time than maybe what me and Oscar do at the minute, but
certainly in my future, I'll go and do it. “I have the same want
and desire as Max to go and do other things, and just go do
whatever I enjoy.”
